Course Numbers

Credit courses are labeled 500 to 999 and 5000 to 9999 with the first digit of each course number indicating the level of the course.

Master’s courses are lower-level courses, and Specialist and Doctoral courses are upper-level courses. Students may evaluate their eligibility for enrolling in a given course according to stated course prerequisites.

Course numbering in the catalog makes use of a course designator system. This system is used to identify courses by discipline, number and level. For example, CO 500, would indicate a Master’s level Counseling course.

Course numbering in the BUF online registration system makes use of a five-component course designator system to assist students in the registration process. This designator system identifies course:

  1. By discipline (e.g., BIL, Biblical Exegetical Studies; EDU, Education; MBA, Business Administration, etc.),
  2. By number and level of course (e.g., 500, 5001, 7001, etc.),
  3. By location, to identify the campus where the course is offered (e.g., G, Graceville; M, Miami)
  4. By format in which the course is taught (e.g., N, Online; H, Hybrid; C, Connection, etc.)
  5. By section number, when more than one offering of the course occurs (e.g., 1, 2, 3).
